Harxon’s Radio Technology in Traditional GNSS RTK and CORS Network
2019-07-29
As the establishment and coverage of national or regional Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) station networks is growing, it has become a remedy for conventional RTK as a method of surveying with GNSS.

CORS, a network of stations where geodetic quality GNSS receivers and antennas that are permanently installed to augment the local accuracy of GPS readings. These stations collect and transmit GNSS data continuously via the internet to a central server. Then the data could be archived for future download or processed to generate corrections that could be available via internet to users in real-time.

However, no matter the conventional RTK application or the CORS network, they both have shortcomings in different applications. For example, the distance between base station and rover has limitations in the conventional RTK applications, while in terms of CORS network solution, its network coverage, CORS station coverage, as well as network transmitting cost too much, which greatly affect the availability of this method for surveying. In order to offer flexible surveying methods in pragmatic applications, Harxon offers a radio product named eRadioTM to perfectly fix these dilemmas for these two ways of surveying.

In traditional GNSS RTK applications, area exceeds the transmitting range of the radio is a problem, Harxon eRadioTM equips the radio repeater function, so that it could either work as a base station or a repeater in challenging environments. In the store and forward operating mode, Harxon eRadio™ receives messages, buffers the received data, and transmits further to another substation. Due to high transmitting power from 5W-35W, transmission data can be up to 19200 bit per second over connection distance between 50 to 80 kilometers depending on the environment. In this way, it could easily extend the coverage area and save cost while improving continuity and reliability of data transmitting in the field.

Harxon eRadionTM also has good performance in CORS stations Network, generally the differential corrections between individual rover and CORS station could be transmitted via radio, internet or GSM, which are flexibility and high accuracy. But the cost of CORS network solution through internet transmitting is quite higher than traditional RTK solution, especially where there are multiple rovers in the same operation area. With the network repeater function, Harxon eRadioTM is capable of solving those issues, which could greatly reduce internet cost by relaying. Instead of directly received data from CORS server, rovers received differential corrections from Harxon eRadioTM that could transmitting these data which it received from CORS server via Internet. In this way, surveyor only need to pay eRadio TM internet cost, no need to afford the total cost of every working rover.

With the function of radio repeater and network repeater, Harxon eRadioTM enlarges transmitting distance by setting up a repeater substation through the radio technology in traditional GNSS RTK application, Also it dramatically help the customer cost down while using eRadioTM to disseminate corrections that obtained from the CORS server via internet to multiple working rovers on site in CORS network application.
